This is a huge price comparison site (run as a ‘hobby project’ by programmer, Mads Phikamphon, in Denmark) which lists over 3 million prices for model railway items on sale in the UK and abroad. A user can set scale/gauge, country, type of item (e.g. UK O-gauge locomotives, rolling stock, electronics etc) using the menu at the top of that site’s page to restrict the search. (Please click the ‘about’ link at the top of that site’s page to read about how to use it and to be alerted to potential pitfalls.)

There are substantial savings to be made by buying some stock from EU countries. However, users are reminded that, since Brexit, anything over £135 will now attract an additional customs charge (plus a further charge by the UK courier (e.g. Royal Mail) for handling that payment before they will release the delivery) and then VAT on top of the combined total, too. 

Goods of less than £135 should have VAT charged at source but will still need the customs duty and courier release fee to be factored in. The substantially increased paperwork and hassle for non-UK-based suppliers means that many have now stopped supplying orders under £135 directly to UK consumers as it is simply not worth their effort. Those with eBay stores will usually still supply UK addresses that way, as eBay handles all the charges and paperwork but at significantly increased cost compared with that which can be obtained by customers who remain in the EU customs union and single market.

Details of the post-Brexit customs arrangements are available from the UK government here but users will need to contact the customs helpline to determine the actual duty to be paid, in order to calculate the final price, before deciding to purchase.
